Karim Nice, Owner & President of BlueHat Mechanical, spent the last 12 years building a very successful water and air filtration products company, serving customers in all 50 states and dozens of countries around the world. In that time, he learned the golden rule of service… do what’s best for the customer and everyone wins. In 2012, Karim decided to sell the company so he could focus on bringing that same level of service to local businesses in the Triangle. In the summer of 2013, Karim purchased HVAC & Refrigeration Experts, a highly respected commercial refrigeration and HVAC services company. In the fall, the company relaunched as BlueHat Mechanical with the goal of helping Raleigh area businesses do what they do best without having to worry about their equipment letting them down. Karim has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, and has over 20 years of experience getting his hands dirty and solving real-world problems.

Paul Levering joined Karim and the team in the Fall of 2013 as a partner in BlueHat Mechanical. Paul was the Founder and CEO of FeatureTel, LLC – one of the pioneers of Cloud Communications (VoIP) services. In 2011, FeatureTel was acquired by Tampa-based Telovations, creating the largest independent Cloud Communications service company in the Southeast. Being a local service company, FeatureTel was focused relentlessly on having the best technicians providing remarkable customer service. Their motto was ‘the best marketing is done by a technician who is kind, smart, and helpful’. Paul has a BS in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill and is a business coach – trained as a Professional EOS Implementer – helping BlueHat run a great company on EOS. Dedicated to service and lifelong learning, he has served as President of the Raleigh-Durham chapter of the Entrepreneur’s Organization (E.O.), Chairman of the Apex Chamber of Commerce, and is obsessed with creating a world-class culture and common-sense processes that delight customers.
Scott – Operations Manager and Experienced Technician

A welcomed addition to the leadership team, Service Manager Scott Hicks has a Heavy Commercial/Industrial background. He is highly experienced in working with equipment such as Boilers, Chillers, Large Office and Industrial systems. Scott’s knowledge combined with his organization skills and willingness to assist technicians in the field make him an outstanding team leader. His relentless focus on customer satisfaction and unwavering attention to understanding our clients’ needs help us continue providing an excellent experience for all BlueHat patrons.

BlueHat Mechanical serves building owners and managers throughout the Triangle. BlueHat’s comprehensive approach to service and maintenance will give your business and building management staff peace of mind through consistent comfort by design.  We offer a free building assessment to help determine recommendations and solutions to help operate and maintain HVACR (heating ventilating air conditioning and refrigeration systems).  Our planned maintenance packages reduce downtime and energy usage, while extending the life of equipment. New technologies allow us to serve clients in a way that is more environmentally friendly and fiscally responsible.


BlueHat Mechanical was born in August 2013 when Karim Nice bought Refrigeration & HVAC Experts – a 15-year-old commercial refrigeration and HVAC service company based in Garner, NC. In January 2014, partner Paul Levering joined the company – financing the acquisition of Capital Refrigeration – a company with an 18-year history in the Raleigh, NC market.

With a long term focus and a simple mandate to ‘do the right thing’ for customers and employees, BlueHat Mechanical’s early initiatives were to strengthen relationships with existing customers and to enhance operations with improved technology. An additional Sales/Customer Service position was created to follow up on job satisfaction and the company upgraded the dispatch function with cloud-based dispatch software.
